Portrayal of Women on Television

First we had Ekta Kapoor with her saas bahu soaps. I feel that her shows got criticized for the wrong reasons. I would not call them regressive. But anyway , her popular shows have all been taken off the air after having ruled for 7-8 years.

Now "Colors" has emerged as the Number one channel. And this has happened because of " Ballika Vadhu", which is enjoying the Number one rating amongst all shows on all channels.

The producers of this show have done a very smart thing. They are showing the story, and at the end of each episode, they show a Hindi sentence that criticizes the traditions and rituals shown in that episode.

Do you think showing/speaking that one sentence is enough to undo the effect of showing an episode full of crap?

Women do like "Saas Bahu" stuff, well most of them. My mother and sister can't live without watching those. So as long as there is a sizeable odience, who cares.
 
making people aware of obsolete rituals which are still being followed is a goodthing.

But yeah my take on these saas bahu are that till the time your mum o sister does not start behaving like one of those characters, it is allowed.

Imagine, sister getting over dressed for her friends birthday, wearing heavy jewellery and always talking to herself, with playing some weird music in the background and over act normal emotions like shock and pain.

My God,world is coming to an end.
 
What do you mean her shows have been taken off Air? she still owns most shows on star plus zee tv and sony ;)

my family cant live without watching these soap operas everyday :rolleyes:
 
i believe that rather than discussing the woman on television, there is so much so discuss other things. what about the real life woman than reel life one.
why not talk about them. i know tv shows the reflection, then why not change the reality....
there are so many completely unaware of their own rights... help them...that's the better way

The reel and real women are different... the situations and their conditions are different... It is illogical to discuss the potrayral of women on television....

They are all different in different shows...an intelligent person must take them as mere sources of entertainment and not get affected from them :rolleyes:
 
Depends on what you see

Television has been the most effective medium and is the most popular form of entertainment. But how a woman is portrayed and what you think of it really depends on the programs you see. Television shows are moderate enough and maintain censor board rules and regulations. No violence should be shown that goes against the female sex as they are already too pitiable.
 
Portrayal of Women on Television.

These saas-bahu soaps are the biggest threat to Indian society. One side we are trying to pull India women out of traditional pictures, but on the other side by relaying these kinds of soaps we are giving them worst ideas. These soaps are for entertainment, but all these serial and movies are basically a part of social image, and believe me India would certainly not like this image to prevail any longer.
 
the most irksome thing which i found about women on television is that they keep weeping all the time. all the television soaps show women weeping most of the times for some reason. secondly, they are so fine dressed up, that even a lady from hamlet looks like a model. this is something which cannot be digested and is way away from being down to earth.
 
The image of women have been deteriorated on Indian television. They show women either as a vamp or a very dumb character that does not have brains. This is completely wrong and I am not at all agree to this image. This is not the real face of indian woman. Indian woman has come far way from the image of bhartiya nari . she is more modern now but keeping her tradition in her mind, she is no more a fool and working in the society just like any men. So the image that these serials portray is completely wrong.

Yes, Even my family is prone to watching television shows like Balika wadhu, sajan bina sasural and sasural gainda fool :) They are so much engrossed in the serials that they even forget the cooking part and other things. I sometimes literally have to shout on my mom to serve food :D The portrayal of indian woman is not the same as they show on television.
 
Women are portrayed as a vamp usually on the television. This damages the image of indian women as a whole. Indian women is the figure of sacrifice and hard work as well as patience but on television there are various serials that portrays all bad character about her. This should not be done as it is kind of a black spot on the image of indian women.
 
Portrayal of women on television is indeed becoming worse as they are shown as vamp. but still there are few serials that are making sense and showing the reality of the rural areas such as TV Serial that comes on Colors named balika vadhu. As far as TRP is concerned Balika Vadhu is still the best. This is because this serial has almost all the best characters. You can actually identify with them and you will feel as if you are one part of the serial. It is truly a great thing to watch this show.
 
While some serials do not show a lot of deviant picture of indian women than actuality, some of the soaps and serials give an over dose which is far from the realities of indian women. Coming to the movies and music videos, women are shown with more vulgarity which has damaging effect on children and youth, changing their way of perception as a whole. I think the censor board must keep a watch on the vulgarities and ask the media people to follow some ethics because our country is not like the west.
 
Television is portraying women in a very strong way.Balika Vadhu is one such program which portrays the importance of a girl to have education and how it ruins a girl's life when she is forced to marry at a young age.Programmes on such issues lets the audience know how a girl child is treated in remote areas.
Television is a strong medium through which issues concerning women are portrayed.
 
Advertisements in television occupy a special position within the economic organization of a modern society, and it is not just an economic entity. Although television is a carrier of information, ideas, thoughts and opinions, it is also a powerful force in influencing people’s perceptions on different issues. Television can be both positive as well as negative in terms of the position and views of women as well as a powerful mechanism for education and socialization. Although television plays an important role in highlighting women's issues, it has also had negative impact, in terms of perpetrating violence against women through pornography and images of women as a female body that can be bought and sold. Women should be empowered by enhancing their skills, knowledge and access to information technology. This will strengthen their ability to combat negative portrayals of women internationally and to challenge instances of abuse of the power of an increasingly important industry.

 
The role of women on television is very well visualized by the mass, but its importance is rarely realized. In layman’s viewpoint, it can be said that actresses are a mere commodity in this commercialized world of television and media. The present world cites the discrimination, women have to go through a lot in competing with the male actors. Although both of them spare equal effort and time towards their work-line; still, women are always less paid in comparison to their counterparts. The age bar again hinders their path of progress in cinemas. The male parts rarely have any age restriction while the female parts are to be wide ranging; including all the aspects. The general female mass’ character is judged on the basis of serial actress’ ones. The depth of serial character is overhung by actions directed to them. Although the women are glamour of this glamorous world, their reality is still hidden in depths.
