Retailing in India is one of most preferred business in the rural and suburban areas of India. It accounts for nearly about 14% of the Indian GDP and about 3.3% of the population work in this sector. Most of the retail shops are unorganized and are run on a very small scale. In the recent years, we have witnessed a change in this sector after the venture of Hypermarkets, Supermarkets and Convenience stores. How do you think is this sector going about in India and how do you think FDI in Multi-brand retailing would affect this sector?

Definitely, FDI in Multi-brand retailing would affect the retailing sector of our nation. Most part of the population of our nation is dependent on the retailing sector and with FDI in Multi-brand retailing, it will affect the nations economy and many people will become unemployed once again. This not a good thing and will hamper the growth and development of our nation. In my opinion FDI in Multi-brand retailing is not going to do any good to our nation. Do you agree?

I feel that there are both pros and cons to this FDI in Retailing. Since you have talked about the cons, let me throw some insights on the pros. Bringing FDI in retail sector would improve the infrastructure of our nation. Large malls/stores/hypermarkets would develop, and indirectly the surrounding area would develop. While some people would be deprived of their jobs, jobs would also be created. Moreover for a multi brand retailing it is mandatory that the retailers must buy their inventory (30%) from the local vendors.
