Seng Kut Snem is an annual festival celebrated in the mesmerising state of Meghalaya, which is situated in the North-Eastern part of India. This festival is celebrated on 23rd of November each year as the foundation day of the Seng Khasi.

About Seng Kut Snem Festival

The State of Meghalaya is an adobe the Khasi, the Jaintia and the Garo tribes. The Garos inhabit the western Meghalaya; the Khasis inhabit the central Meghalaya, and the Jaintias the eastern Meghalaya. Shillong is the capital of the state, which is also known as the ‘Style capital of North -east’ and the “Scotland of the East”. Amongst the different tribal communities residing in Meghalaya, the Khasi community is one of the largest and has its own culture, religion, beliefs and identity. The Festival of Seng Kut Snem is celebrated in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. It is an annual indigenous festival held in the month of November. The Seng Khasi members following the traditional Khasi faith or the Niam Khasi gather to pay their respects to God, the Almighty and this festival is dedicated as the foundation day of this tribe. The Seng Kut Snem is a festival which is mainly celebrated to conserve and exhibit their culture and traditions. This festival is not only to preserve the culture of the Seng Khasi community but it also acts as a token to all cultures across India to hold on to their cultural and religious importance.

Seng Kut Snem also known as Ka Seng Kut Snem festival of Seng Khasi is celebrated to memorize the day when Seng Khasi was formed and it is being celebrated as a day when the members of the Seng Khasi and showcases the Khasi culture in all its richness. It is a day to be memorized with thankfulness to those great thinkers who formed the Seng Khasi and its existence was conscientious for the present position as a community who continues to endorse its rich culture and distinctiveness. This festival acts as a way of excitement and amusement for the Khasi Community. They sing, dance, play music and have great merriment during this festival. The sound of different musical instruments fills the ambience with fresh effervescence. Kids, adults, men and women all come together to celebrate this festival. Although, earlier it was purely a religious festival, but with time, this festival has grown and has gained popularity not only in the entire North Eastern region and Shillong looks forward for this festival year long but has also become popular all through out the nation. People from different parts of the nation as well as from other parts of the globe visits Shillong during this festival to get a glimpse of this beautiful festival that showcases the richness of the Khasi tribe.
