The capital of the state, is a charming hill station and popular year-round holiday destination. Being close to the plains of Punjab it provides an easy get away from the oppressive summer heat. A narrow gauge 'toy train' from Kalka to Shimla passes through 102 tunnels. It takes six hours for the 96 km journey (twice the time taken by car) stopping at many quaint Swiss chalet style railway stations. There are three main river valleys in the state Kullu, Kangra and Chamba, each with its own allure and places to visit. Kullu valley had often been called the most beautiful on earth. About a km wide and 80 km long, a journey through the valley offers a view of the most breathtaking landscapes. The colors change with the seasons as orchards of apple, apricots, peach and cherry or giant red rhododendrons and blue iris burst into bloom.
