Tarun Ram Phukan is popularly known as Deshbhakta, which means a patriot, was a prominent freedom fighter and a political leader of India. He was an eminent member of Assam Association, which was a political organization formed during 1920. He played a noteworthy role in the formation of the Assam division of the Indian National Congress Party in the year 1921. Tarun Ram Phukan was appointed as the first President of the Assam division of Congress. He was also one of the leading members of the Non-Cooperation Movement, who travelled to various areas of Assam to deliver the message of Mahatma Gandhi. He was also arrested by the British Government and was sentenced to scrupulous imprisonment for a year in 1921 for his partaking in the Non-Cooperation Movement.

Background
Tarun Ram Phukan was born in the city of Guwahati in the Kamrup District of Assam on January 22, 1877. He received his high school education from Cotton Collegiate School in Guwahati, which is one of the oldest a renowned school of the state. After completion of his high school, he got admission in the prestigious Presidency College of Calcutta. Later he moved to the Bar from Inner Temple in London and studied law. After his completion of Law, he came back to Guwahati and served as Lecturer in Earle Law College in Guwahati.

Contribution towards Freedom Movement of India

Tarun Ram Phukan was rightly named Dekhbhakta for his love towards the nation. He joined the freedom movement and fought selflessly for the Independence. He joined the Assam Association and became a prominent leader as he possessed leadership qualities. His contribution towards forming a division of National Congress party in Assam is noteworthy and with his effort the freedom struggle in the state came to the limelight. In the year 1921 The Assam Provincial Congress Committee (APCC) was formed with its headquarters at Guwahati and Kuladhar Chaliha was appointed as the president of the committee but later Tarun Ram Phukan was appointed as the president of the committee. The reconstituted APCC elected Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Gopinath Bordoloi, Tarun Ram Phukan, Chandranath Sarmah, Kanak Chandra Sarmah and Krishna Nath Sarmah as the members of the AICC. This new committee started in 1921 and invited Mahatma Gandhi to Assam to propagate the message of non cooperation amongst the general public. His gave significant thrust to the workers of the Indian National Congress to carry out the Non-cooperation Movement and implement the Swadeshi principles. In the year 1926, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Reception Committee, Pandu Session of the Indian National Congress party. This session was directed by S. Srinivasa Iyengar and other prominent national leaders, i.e. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel, Motilal Nehru, Madan Mohan Malaviya, Sarojini Naidu, Abul Kalam Azad, Shaukat Ali, Muhammad Ali, S. Satyamurti, and many more. He was as well appointed as the Chairman of the Municipal Board and Local Board of Guwahati and held responsibility of different programmes for the development of the under-privileged sections of society. In the same year, the All India Congress Committee session was held at Pandu, Guwahati. Phukan formed a Leper Asylum in Guwahati. In the year 1927, he became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, which was a leading literary organisation in Assam at its Goalpara Session. He also served as the President of the Assam Chhatra Sammelan in 1928. Tarun Phukan was prominent writer and a great speaker. His contribution towards the freedom movement of India is remarkable as he encouraged and motivated the people of Assam to jump into the freedom struggle to free India from the colonial rule of the British. He died at the age of 62 on July 28, 1939.
