An archipelago of 36 islands, Lakshadweep is one of the most popular travel destinations of India. Agatti Island
Agatti Island is considered the gateway to the Lakshadweep Islands, which is a chain of islands that lies about 320 km off the south-west coast of India. The most serene spot of this island is the Agatti Island Resort that offers one of the world’s best swimming beaches. Apart from the beach, the resort houses a huge and shallow lagoon and is surrounded by several coconut trees. The island offers blue lagoons, sugary white beaches, coral reefs and swaying palms. Various water sports can be availed in this island such as snorkelling, sailing, water skiing, scuba diving, kayaking, glass bottom boat rides and deep sea fishing. A variety of fish, corals and turtles can be viewed in the island. The island also offers sea excursions to neighbouring uninhabited islands such as Parali, Thinnakara and Kalpitty.
Pitti Island
Paradise for Ornitologist, Pitti Island is a small deserted island situated in the vicinity of the Agatti Island and is a part of the Pitti bank. Amini Island and Pitti Island are a part of the sunken atoll, which is also well known for the variety of birds. This particular island has been converted into a bird sanctuary, which attracts the birdwatchers from different parts of the orb.
Agatti Museum
Located at a distance of 2 km from the beach near a village, Agatti Museum is a popular tourist attraction of the place. The museum is a government run museum, which features various replicas and sculptures of marine life. A variety of corals, shells, fish and aquatic animals are found in aquarium like enclosures. Trinkets like ornaments, headgear, clothing, etc. belonging to the tribes from different parts of the Lakshadweep islands are found in this place. There is a large cannon in the entrance of the museum.
Lighthouse, Minicoy
Lighthouse, also known as South Side Lighthouse, was constructed by the British in 1885. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in Lakshadweep and was under the British control until India’s independence. It has a height of around 300 ft, which makes it visible even from a far away distance. The Lakshadweep Islands, Arabian Sea and Virgin Islands can be seen from the top of this Lighthouse. The lighthouse is surrounded by coconut groves and white sand, which further enhances the beauty of the place.
Minicoy Island
Another popular tourist places is the Minicoy Island, which is located in the southernmost region of Lakshadweep. The second largest island in the entire region, Minicoy Island has a semi-lunar shape. It is the only island in which the Mahl language is spoken and on all the other islands Malyalam is spoken. Counted amongst one of the largest lagoon in Lakshadweep, the island is ideal for tuna fishing. The factories located on the island are generally engaged in tuna canning. There are a number of ice plants and cold storage machines present within the factories.
