Gujarat High Court Chief Justice K S Radhakrishnan on Friday said that trial by media is not good as it sometimes affect the judiciary by generating strong opinion from the people.

Stating the recent example of declaration of assets by judges, Justice Radahkrishnan said that the media played a vital role in creating opinion among people on the issue.

He was speaking at the inagural function of a three day workshop on media and law at the Gujarat National Law University, here today. BJP leader and lawyer Arun Jaitely was also present at the function.

"Trial by media sometimes does not give the accused a fair trial," Radhakrishnan said giving refrence to Arushi murder case.

Sometimes, like in case of declaration of assets by judges, strong opinions generated by media are not good as it affects the judiciary, he said.

The Chief Justice was of the opinion that media needs to have a self imposed code of conduct as it has importance similar to that of law and justice has for moulding a society.

"Like law and justice are neccessary for the development of the soceity, media too plays an important role in bringing about social change," Radahkrishnan said.

yes i think media plays a role to mold the society but it is true that i should not come to conclusions and air its views to the public as the people may develop a wrong contention against the subject. rather than doing this it can ask the views of people on the situation and bring those view to the judiciary so that it can make of the peoples emotions and views on a situation

yes..i have noticed this amongst many news channels that they make their own conclusive grounds without knowing the actual facts. the reason for this is purely monetary gains and fame. all they want to show is they have worked hard enough and got through some really important facts and its only them who possess that. finally the so called factual news is showed as exclusive news without any hesitations

We can see number of such cases around where media takes the judgment into its own hands. All this is done to gain attention of the viewers and thus increase its TRP. But media fails to understand that creating such false notion amongst the viewers can sometimes cause uprising and fury amongst group of people which is quite unhealthy. Moreover if what media predicts comes to be false, the accused may get a tag of being culprit just for nothing.

Yes, in my view its now wise of media to create any speculations on any case by giving their conclusions. This could also cause defamation of the charged person or any institution which is an irreversible aspect. So media should only try to bring forth things to public and leave the judgment for the judiciary to take.
