Udupi is a prominent pilgrimage destination, especially for the Hindus and is the hub of Dvaita philosophy. Udupi is known as the temple town and is located at a distance of 60kms from Mangalore. It is one of the important cities of the state of Karnataka and the famous Udupi cuisine derived its name from this place. The Krishna Temple which was built during the 13th century is one of the major attractions of this religious place. Paraya festival which is held in the month of January is another tourist attraction apart from the temple. The city gets its name as Temple town for the reason that it has several temples such as Balakrishna Temple,Anantheshwar Temple, Chandramoulishwar Temple and Anantha Padmanabha are among the ancient temples of the city. Other pilgrimage destinations of the city includes Indrani Panchadurga, Kamalashile Brahmi Durgaparameshwari Temple and Shri Laxmi Venkatesha Temple. Beaches are also an attraction for the visitors of this place.
