How to Make Your Home Disability Friendly

In a bid to make life comfortable for people who are differently abled, the care and concern begins at home. Before they step out and face the mad world, it is the home where they should be cared and welcomed with open arms. Needlessly to mention that physically challenged people must have few things comfortably at their disposal. And, this begins at home, again. Even though it is difficult to restructure the home completely at times, but little changes can make their lives immensely joyous and fruitful. Here are few tips that may help you to make your home disability friendly. Have a look :

Remove the Clutter

Unobstructive and free movement is essential for people who are differently abled. If there are too many things in the room, then in a way their independent movement gets restricted. So, remove all the clutter and obstruction from the house. Or else arrange the household items in a way, so that a challenged person can move around with comfort and ease. Have chairs and tables that can be folded when required. This also lends more space to the room.

Have ramps and handles

Have handles and ramps within the house. This will ensure that the person can help himself while moving around the house. Make sure there are nothing on the walls that can pose any harm to the person. Use ramps instead of the stairs to make the movement even more seamless.

Keep the Floor even

Uneven floor is a big no no, if you have anyone who needs help with movement. If a person is wheelchair bound, uneven or rough or two smooth flooring can make his movement extremely difficult. Also, with uneven floors that is always a possibility of tripping and falling down, which may hurt the person immensely and make the situation worse. So, ensure that the flooring has required friction so that the person can move freely all around.

Accessible Washrooms

This is one area that probably needs the most care. Most often we undermine the need of accessible washroom for a differently abled person. It has a lot to do with the person’s self respect and comfort. Making the washroom accessible to the person is thus an integral part of making the home feasible for him. Have the wash basin and urinals within the limits. Also, make the tapes easy to use. Have hangers in points that are not too high to reach. And lastly, make the doors automatic or at least the knobs easy to operate. This will make life way more comfortable for them.

Kind and Empathetic Housemates

Last, but not the least, the people who are residing with the person who is differently abled. While all the materials can be handled, moved or removed accordingly, but it is the people who need to extremely caring and warm. A differently abled person doesn’t need sympathy, He instead needs a lot of love, respect and empathy from his family and friends. Treat him with care. Don’t make him feel burdened. And this will make his life more purposeful, less burdened and wholesome.
