Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was one of the honourable recipients of the Indian military highest gallantry award the Param Vir Chakra. He was born on 13 September 1946, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was selected in the Short Service Commission in the Mahar Regiment, on 16 January 1972. He actively participated in many of the operations initiated by our Indian Army. Major Ramaswamy was commissioned in the Mahar Regiment, when he was sent to Sri Lanka to participate in the Operation; Pawan. Basically it was under the Indo-Sri Lanka Agreement according to which many of the Indian Army crews were sent to maintain the law and order in that country.

Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran displayed a heroic spirit during the Pawan operation as well as on the day of November 25 1987 when he was returning back from a search operation somewhere in Sri Lanka. It was late night time when Major Parameswaran and his crewmen got trapped and assaulted by a LTTE militant group. This sudden attack by the militants did not shaken Ramaswamy’s brave heart rather he instantly made a strategy to attack the militants from the rear side. This was indeed an intelligent action and decision implemented by Major Parameswaran at that time. That was a hand to hand combat between the Mahar crewmen and the LTTE militants.

One of the militant shot in the chest of Major Ramaswamy, in middle of the combat. But he was not ready to give up rather having badly injured; he snatched a rifle from a militant and shot him dead. Major Ramaswamy was constantly giving commands in order to inspire his crewmen to bash up even the single militant of that very combat. Even after being shot, Major Ramaswamy shot two more LTTE militants. Finally the combat came to end leaving Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran and five LTTE militants being dead. A cache of arms with three rifles and two rocket launchers were captured by the Mahar men after the combat. Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran proved himself as truly a brave-hearted man; his eminent and indomitable courage and intelligence have remained memorable. His each and every action and decision during that combat made it successful but simultaneously demanded him to selflessly sacrifice his life. He was indeed a Param Vir.
